This is the sound of the understory in Leuser: We are 1500m up in a hanging valley beneath the spreading crown of a giant Picus tree at a location where a bird trapper once of stood waiting, watching to catch a Hornbill. As the dawn light spreads across the canopy the remains of the bird trap are visible dangling from a branch. Silent among all this, an Oragutan is awaking nearby. I watched her with child, as she made her nest the evening before.
We are at a point now where human consciousness contends with the realisation of our entanglement within the non-human realm: with climate, with oceans with the loss of rainforests and species. The Leuser ecosytem will probably join the stands of the silenced within a generation. Faced with this my intention is circumscribed and my response limited to a sort of a quixotic act of remembrance; to document in sound a tapestry of complexity on the verge of unraveling. What creative response is commensurate to the circumstance of a rainforests disappearance?
Remembering may be a radical act in the future if we forget the worlds we are loosing today. My hope for you then, dear listener, is turn off your devices, walk into your local woods and sit below a tree and be still. Remain there and give attention to what is right before you. Repeat daily until you know the place intimately. Why listen from the outside when you can be present?
