Last year I moved to the Blue Mountains two hours west of Sydney. Australia is so often associated with its sunshine and coastline, but in these mountains (small hills by international comparison), the climate can roughly approximate the alpine, which means that the seasons, that are generally more nominal on the coast, actually manifest in more obvious ways.
This recording was taken in my backyard one morning at the very end of winter and captures a gathering of Pied Currawongs. While the branches of the introduced European trees on which they sat remained bare, the very nature of their gathering and of their chorus, markedly different to their solo singing, seemed a clear indication of the anticipation of spring. It offered such wonderful polyphony that I have augmented their composition with harmonic material, triggered by the rhythms of the calls themselves, in order to humbly join the joy of their song.
