Across San Franciscoʼs Golden Gate Bridge, in the fog shadow of a sacred mountain named TAM, four protected canyons rise from the wild sea. For ten thousand years Marin County was home to the Coast Miwok, who believed TAM the domain of the god Coyote. In more recent times, the canyons hosted a family farm; and for over fifty years, a wildlife sanctuary, Audubon Canyon Ranch.
“Four Canyons” is a sound walk through these ocean canyons, with their falling streams, seeping wetlands and deep stands of towering redwoods. Mornings can be surprising with any of the 245 species of birds and mammals who live and visit Audubon Canyons. In Spring, the sounds of a heron and egret nursery echo across Pitcher Canyon; while next door, in Volunteer Canyon, the hum of human history blends seamlessly with natureʼs song artists. Garden Club Canyon features newt-filled Parsonʼs Pond and raucous red-winged blackbirds; while the more introspective Pikeʼs Gulch, hides its denizens in an alder bog.
Audubon Canyon Ranch is a sanctuary for wildlife and a place where science and education are helping us understand and appreciate our earthly cosmology. My soul walks here, with the spirits of the disappearing animals and the Native Americans, between the sacred mountain, Coyote, and the wild Pacific.
