Eastern Resonance is made from combining two sets of morning recordings taken in Ontario and Quebec. These recordings have very different source material with the Quebec portion focusing on the acoustic sounds of morning - bells, birds and faint chatter. The recordings taken in Ontario focus on the sounds of a voltage regulator humming as streams of electricity are sent to households in a morning rush as well as the interior resonances of transmission tower support wires. This combination of material that is very tied to time and place with sound that is more amorphous, created from connections and fluctuations in the national power grid creates a soundscape focusing on the sounds of local activity and a more national sonic landscape.

Dan Tapper explores the sonic and visual properties of the unheard and invisible. From revealing electromagnetic sounds produced by the earth’s ionosphere, to exploring hidden micro worlds and creating imaginary nebulas made from code. His explorations use scientific methods alongside thought experiments resulting in rich sonic and visual worlds.
