Here, the wind dances across walls of time.
The air rises and falls as the temperature varies across the topography of the canyon, the wind ripping through the Ponderosa Pine and the vibrant white-barked Aspen that cling to its walls, creating a disturbance that spills out into the forest park above. As night turns to day the wind slowly appears to settle into a hollow roar, as the sun rises and the shadows across the walls retreat into the depths of the canyon, the spreading light revealing the vividly articulated layers of colourful rock. Each layer holds an expanse of space and time, generating a sense of stillness that belies the turbulent air.
“Descending Shadows” uses recordings from the dense forests to the sharp edge of the canyon both to communicate the powerful motion of the air and to shape the slow emergence of layers of a composition that reflects upon the stillness, the expanse and the formation of the Grand Canyon.
