Cloud Forest to Coast traverses from the 3 AM winds of the highland cloud forest near Monteverde to early morning sounds of insects, birds and people near the coast at Playa Blanca, ending with the squeaky, hissing sound of a resort sprinkler system which I carefully tracked down, imagining I might find an exotic creature hiding in the foliage.

Matt Rogalsky

Based in Kingston Ontario Canada, Matt Rogalsky works in sonic arts with a focus on live electroacoustic music performance, intermedia installation, and study of late-20th century live electronic music works by other composers. His recent activities include workshops and performances in Canada, Portugal, Germany, Cuba, the USA, and the UK. His installation work has most recently been shown at Fieldwork (2017), Université de Laval Gallery (2016), the Electric Eclectics Festival (2014), Supercrawl (2015), and Mercer Union (2013). He is also known for his sound recording and production with a wide range of artists under the name Memory Device, including JUNO, Canadian Folk Music Awards, and Polaris Prize nominated albums. As a sound designer and mix engineer, he has recently worked with filmmakers Clarke Mackey, Gary Kibbins and installation artist Lynne Marsh. He is part of the collective which annually produces Kingston’s Tone Deaf Festival of adventurous sound performance. His academic background includes studies at Simon Fraser University (BA, Contemporary Arts), Wesleyan University (MA, Music) and City University London UK (PhD, Music), and he teaches at Queen’s University where he is Director of the Sonic Arts Studio in the Dan School of Drama and Music.
