This recording consists of layered traditional field recordings and electromagnetic spectrum recordings from three different wildfires in California, including the worst in the state’s history: the Tubbs Fire. Over a dozen fires started simultaneously on October 8th, 2017 due to low humidity and 70 mph winds. Over 8,400 structures were destroyed and 42 people were killed in this series of fires referred to as the Central LNU Complex which burned over 250,000 acres.

A special device was used to record the electromagnetic spectrum (the actual sounds of electricity and circuits). What you hear may sound like synthesizers or drum beats, but the airy scary pad synth sound is actually the LED control panel on the side of a fire engine near the hose couplings. The rhythmic sounds resemble a precisely programmed drum machine, but are in fact blinking lights of various emergency vehicles.

Two separate recordings, when layered together, comprise the completed composition you are hearing. One is composed from traditional field recordings, and the second from the previously mentioned electromagnetic spectrum recordings. North American PhoNographic Mornings will air the version with EMS and traditional field recordings combined. The other two can be found as a post on my Patreon.

Additionally, these recordings can be “read” as soundtrack work to a film not yet in existence. Or rather, the film is partially in existence. This process may result in a scenario where the soundtrack is created before the film is edited. My California On Fire film will be divided into five chapters based on the stages of grief. This work will most likely be used for ‘Chapter 3 Bargaining’.

I am an artist of many mediums. My best known work combines installation, optical illusions painted on abandoned structures, photography, and sound art in short films created predominantly from hundreds of thousands of photographs (time lapse). Four years ago I set out to show a present day effect of the Earth heating up for a contemporary art film, California On Fire. One of these effects is the intensification of natural weather systems everywhere. In California this manifests most frequently as drought, which leads to dehydrated ground fuels and is the reason fires start with more ease and burn both faster and longer than they have in the past. I trained as a firefighter for this body of work, and have traveled to roughly 50 large fires in California since 2014.
